Don't you just wish you could go to any store, whether it be a Brit store or even your local grocery store and buy CREAM CAKES?

That's what I miss. Eclairs, apple turnovers, strawberry tarts, and those 'slices' ....forgot the name but they're made with puff pastry with icing on the top and thick cream in the middle!
Can't beat British cakes in my opinion!

Yeah, the cream and the cakes here just aren't the same. For one the cream's too sweet. Pretty sad :(

I think we called them "cream slices"! I'm actually quite glad that I still can't stand the taste of American cakes and choccies - otherwise I would be as big as a house now!
I do miss eclairs, proper easter biscuits and hot cross buns, custard slices...Yum! :)

ukm

The ironic thing is that I used to say that I missed cream cakes, yet in the year we have been back in the UK, I don't think I've ever bought any. I've made scones and had them with cream, but I did that in the US too.

I think we called them Angel slices or someat like that. I don't eat cake anymore, well, except cheesecake, that's more savory than sweet, that's my interpretation and I'm sticking to it.

Vanilla Slice.
At least that what they were called at Coombs Bakery which is where I used to buy them.

Hi Indybrit!
Oh yeah! I loved Coombes bakery. But Brucciani's was my favorite - lemon iced buns with the whipped cream in the middle!
It's wonderful to meet an ex-Leicester expat!
I miss Bradgate Park, too. (
I cannot eat desserts over hear, save icce cream of course, I CANNOT STAND the frosting they use, it is completely gross. Took my wife to Tescos when we were back home and she absolutely marvelled at the desserts available and her eyes popped out when she saw the cheese counter.
This country claims to be the best in the world and yet they "don't do" double cream. Philistines.

The Loblaws bakeries section in Ottawa has most of the cream cakes you mention and the last one you mentioned is called a Cream slice. One other cream cake that is both rich and creamy is the Nanaimo bar.

Those jam doughnuts are unobtainable here....the big round blobs, covered in granulated sugar and with a similar blob of jam in the middle.

Chocolate in this country is crap. People rave about "Godiva" chocolate which is better than Hersheys by far but nowhere near even British chocolate let alone Belgian, German or Swiss who are the chocolate masters.

Bakewell tarts are another exceedingly good cake you'll not find here.

Tim Hortons have a great one that has a big blob of Blueberry jam in the middle.

How long were you in England for?

My wife's been talking more and more about making a trip so I see us going some time next year.

We lived in Mountsorrel so were only a few minutes from Bradgate.
Definitely one of the nicest places to spend a Sunday afternoon. :D

I was back for just under a month, due to a birth (my niece), a death (my Grandpa) and to renew our visa's in London. Though my Husband Tom was only back for 2 weeks due to lack of time off.

It was nice to be back in Leicester and strange to see how High Street and Grandby Street now have some really nice bars and restaurants. The Shires was still the same but the Haymarket looks a lot better now it's now all white marble and glass instead of that horrible 70's brown! lol

Definately worth a trip back for you both wink
