We've only had our DTV just over a month and already it has gone out for a whole day during a light snow storm (they said it was an error on the system and not the weather) and then on Sunday, just when I needed to recover from my hen night hangover, it went almost totally.
Only 2 channels are watchable and the people at DTV can't come out until Thursday to reposition the dish... that's 4 days with just 2 channels!!
I thought these kind of problems with satellite TV only happened on the Cable TV commercials, but now I'm starting to wonder - has anyone else had problems??
Stel.
Sorry to hear that, Stel.
Got cable here so can't be of any assistance whatsoever but it's nice to see my name on all posts this time of night! o

Had Directv for years and never had the problems you speak about .
It will occasionally go out during a storm (same problem with cable ) but its for a few hours never a whole day .
I love the system the pic is great channel selection is more than time warner can offer and the staff i find to be very friendly and much more knowledgable then the morons employed at the cable station .
Whats more DirectV is the only system that has available *sunday ticket *for purchase allowing me to see any sunday game i wish during the football season .
We each make our own decision on cable /dish according to our experiance and with me its a no brainer Directv wins by a landslide .
You dish was probably installed incorrectly, although snow on the dish can be a problem. Our dish is on the chimney so I just light up the gas fire - tho this has only happened once in the last 5 years or so.
You should be able to go into the setup and see the signal strength. If you get less that about 75 from any transponders then you need to have them come out and fix their sloppy work.
If the dish wasn't tightened up properly even the weight of the snow could have moved it enough. Also, if you have a tree in the line of sight, that'll be a problem.

We had DirectTV when we first moved over to Maine as cable was limited to standard cable.
As soon as digital cable was available I had it switched over.
In the winter we had several days when the satellite would go out for hours due to cloudy or snowy weather, and that was quite a mild winter much like this year up here.
My son went out and cleaned the snow off the dish but that didn't help because of the dense cloud cover.
I can only imagine how much we would have been without service last year when we had heavy snow and many many cloudy days.
I actually found that cable has just as good picture quality, if not better than satellite and it's never gone out since we got it.
Well we have Dish Network, and have had it through two very snowy winters and haven't lost service yet.
Comcr@p, on the other hand used to go out regularly.
Sounds like a faulty installation to me, but you should have gone for Dish, its cheaper than direcTV wink
We've had DirecTV for over 2 years now. I've found them very efficient and good with their service.
when we moved we had problems with the picture, but that was soon sorted as a tree was partially in the way, with line of site etc.....
The only real problem I had with them was for the Rugby World cup final. $30 PPV. and then they switched it off at the end of full time not realising there was extra time imminent. They soon switched it on I guess with the influx of irate English and Aussie customers calling in...........

How did you fix this? I think the installer was useless (it was his first day on the job) but also there are some trees he was trying to avoid... will we have to chop our trees off, do you think?
I got Directv due to Comcast putting our rates up $15 a month. The picture quality is much better, I got a DVR that records 80 hrs for $4.99 a month and we have had 50 mph wind, the most snow in 5 years and terrential rain and the picture has been perfect all the time.

Called Directv after our move and they got the guy out to fix it.
cost me nowt.
Had dish until October last year, then went onto Direct TV.
Had had no problems with either excepts for a couple of minutes here and there if there is a really major torrential downpour.
In our apartment we used to have cable, lost count of how many times it went out due to rain, snow, electrical problems...Plus it was more expensive and had less programs.

The guy came and fixed it yesterday while Him was home so I have no answers as to why it happened. I would personally have grilled him as to what could have caused this, but all Him got was "the dish is loose" roll
It seems to be fine now though. Hopefully it was all just bad luck due to our inexperienced installer.
I like DirecTV a lot more than cable, although the remote control could be a little better organised and the menu fonts could be larger.....
Thanks for the input.
