Used to really enjoy his Letter from America in the years following the war.
I was amazed that he was still providing that same service until just recently.
That's too bad..

I to enjoyed listening to his "Letters From America" as well Keith....

He'd only just stopped doing them a few weeks back.

Isn't it weird how when people stop doing these things they die?

Too bad.

Andrew
It is fitting though that he got to sign off to his listeners last month.

I enjoyed his broadcasts and had his book on America several years back. I was happy to see my local library had it on offer as well.

Great broadcaster and his work should provide a fine audio record of the British view of America in some interesting times. I know my parents enjoyed listening to his broadcasts and it would often spark conversation items when we'd talk on the phone.

Yes, although in this case I think he stopped because he was dying and it got too hard... :-?

He was presenter of *masterpiece theatre * one of the beebs classiest produstions .
I used to listen to his Letter From America programme on Radio 4 and up to a few weeks ago I used to listen to his programme every so often on the world service. I read that Alistair Cook wasnt going to be doing his Letter From America anymore, and when I heard that he had died it didnt come as that much of a shock. I really enjoyed listening to his comments and observations, and as a kid and as an adult I was fascinated by his insight on US politics and world politics and history, he had somewhat of a unique perspective on the United States. A perspective I wish I had as a kid and an adult!! On PBS last night I watched Masterpiece theatre where there was a tribute to Alistair Cook. They showed his speech to congress in the bicentennial year. I loved watching every minute of it. It seems kind of strange to think that he's gone. If someone had said to me 20 years ago whilst I was listening to his show that I'd be living in the states too I'd have laughed!!
I know what you mean BOC.

Perhaps Alistair has much to answer for in my case too - him and "Dallas" wink
