I found this website the other day that lists goalkeepers. Got me thinking which ones I would put on my list. For me it would be Bruce Grobbelaar of Liverpool and Steve Cherry of Notts. Although I remember a game where Man Utd played Brighton and Garry Bailey had an awesome game for Man Utd.
Can't remember the Brighton keeper though! Any votes for David James? I am amazed his the England no.1 these days. Been sometime since I watched an England game prehaps he has transformed himself.
I know that right now Buffon is considered the best today - and he's up there with Kahn for the best of very recent times. I've always liked Italina keepers and defenders - Toldo, Marchegiani, Zenga, good keepers. And for me Paulo Maldini is the best defender I've ever seen.
Schmeichel was irritatingly good - always bothered me that he was as good as he was. I didn't ever rate Grobelaar, I always thought he was fairly naff. If I had to describe him to people today I'd say like Fabien Barthez, except he enjoyed farting about more.
Me, I'd pick either Dasaev (Russia), Schumacher (West Germ) or Ravelli (Swe). They were phenomenal.
I had hopes that Dudek would keep getting better and better - he looked super-sharp a few years back. Now he's suffering but mainly because Henchoz is crap, and Hyppia has gone off the boil.
Beest's a keeper -he gets my vote D oops 8)
Phil Parks gets my vote!!
He had the best hairstyle )
with an honourable mention to Mervyn Day and David Harvey wink
I've seen Cherry and Grobbelaar play for Plymouth over the years - Cherry was the sterotypical, northern fat bastard, whoate-all-the-pies, big lad between the sticks but better than Grobbelaar IMO. A slimmer version of John Burridge I suppose.
Grob was just a loon that would dribble the ball out to the wing and then promptly lose it, leaving his defenders horribly exposed and at a loss as to why he thought they might need his "help" outfield.
Best keeper? There's only one decent French keeper playing in England and his name is Romaine Larrieu. Makes Bartez look like a comprehensive school keeper. Thing is that he got injured earlier this season so his understudy has been in goal and refuses to give up his starting place, even though Larrieu is fit again. There's a reason why we have a +42 goal difference this season so far and he is it.
You won't have heard of him yet but one day he'll play in the Premier League. Only 21 so plenty of time yet.
"Super, super Luke, Super Luke McCormick!"
Pat Jennings, apparently he was a lazy sod in training and always used to say "I'll save them when I have to" the geezer had great big hands, only keeper that has remided me of him in the last 20 years has been Peter Schmeicel (I have no idea how to spell his name).
A close second would have to be Gordon Banks, because of "the save" against Pele....
Ah, you beat me to Pat Jennings, a top keeper.
Big Pat was a legend
He's one of the select few who played for Arsenal and Tottenham. Poor thing!! wink
It could have been worse he could have played for Palace too!! wink
Doesn't the German who broke his neck in the Cup Final and played on not worth a mention

John Burridge is a legend, a Palace legend and a legend in his own lunchtime!! :)
Do you think Kevin Pressman is going to be the Burridge of the Owls?

Bert Trautmann - think he was a German Prisoner of War who stayed in the UK after repatriation at the end of WW2.
Had my own Trautmann-esque episode when I played an entire half of indoor soccer (24 minutes) in goal with a double fractured wrist and kept a clean sheet. Shame I had to miss the rest of that season and the next to fix all the damage though :(

A few years ago the BBC showed an old clip of trautmann breaking his neck. Wasnt it when he jumped to make a save and he smacked his head on the woodwork? It always reminds me of that old Harry Enfield sketch with new Liverpool and the old football team with Charles 'Charlie' Charles!! one of the Charles brothers :)
Hilarious!! :D
