I am planning to return to UK from the USA and Allied, the likely removals company, has sent me a description of the C-3 customs declaration that needs to go with my stuff. The Allied-supplied spiel implies that VAT may be payable on household goods even if they are old. Is this correct?

If the goods belong to you, are more than 6 months old, you keep them in the UK for at least 12 months, and they don't belong in any restricted category, there is no duty or VAT.

HMCE Notice
Hi

From memory there is also a restriction based on "reasonable" amount of household goods.

My removal people said there are no problems with 1 washing mc, 1 dryer, 1 etc etc But there could be problems with duplicate items.

On a slightly different note, i'm moving from Denver to New York but will be returning to the UK sometime in the first half of 2005. I don't want to move all my stuff and want to send some of it back to the UK now, by USPS. The first batch is 7 36X24" pictures in frames......is customs going to hold these up if I delcare a value of around $500 and if so how do I fill out to C3 form and give it to the Post Office ?

Any suggestions ?

Ameriscot is right. They have to be over six months old and used. Be on the safe side if you still have prove of purchase, keep them at hand you may be asked to provide proof of purchace. It's up to you to prove that the items in question met the conditions layed down by C & E. If you have any locked items send the keys to your shipping agent when you submit your C3 declaration form. Yes I know it sounds like I am telling folks to suck eggs, read that form very carefully and make sure you have nothing in your consignment that will cast a Dim light. It just holds stuff up, paper work and possible fines etc

IMO your pictures are absolutely worthless. But perhaps they have a sentimental value to you?
