Okay, I've eaten Sprouts just a few times in the 17 yrs I've been here, but last night, I prepared them for the first time in 17 yrs. I peeled off the outer layers no problem, but then baffled my husband when I cut a split into them. When he asked me why, I couldn't answer. Not sure if I remember knowing the answer, but that's the way me mum always did it, and the way I did it growing up.

Why do we do that???
Cutting a cross in the base of the sprout enables them to be cooked more evenly as it provides a larger surface area so the stalk gets cooked at the same time as the head.

Hope this clears up that little culinary question for you, Elaine! D
