We went to see the Norfolk Admirals play ice hockey last night. I have to say it was a very exciting (and macho) sport, but can anyone tell me the basic rules? Every few minutes players would leap onto the ice as other ones left, I know they were swapping out but how does it work, and who is telling them when to go? Is the object of the game to get a goal or to beat seven shades of shit out of the opposing team? There were blokes behind us who were yelling 'fight, fight' .. o Various players were made to sit out for 'slashing' and 'roughing', which to me was an understatement. I wonder if anyone has ever been seriously injured in a bust up?
In all, great fun but a bit drawn out. Must be totally knackering to play though. Admirals won though. Played Houston.

Oooh Lizzi, I am sure my sweet husband will be around soon to enlighten you )

I love hockey also! Great sport, very rough and manly *LOL*
Basically, each team has 5 players on the ice plus the goalie (making 6 total). 2 are defnders and 3 are attackers (called the "line"). There is a 1st line, 2nd line, 3rd line and so on....each being a set of 3 players that play together. Similarly, there are sets of defenders that play together. Also there will be special units for special situations...for example, penalty kill units if a player gets sin-binned. These players will swap usually in 3's (the line) or 2's (defenders) at a time and I think when they do it is predetermined in training by time and depending on where the puck is....i.e. if they have time to change over without losing momentum.

The goal is to score as many goals as possible rather than beat each other up but it is very physical and a certain amount of contact is desirable although I've not been able to suss out what is allowed and what isn't. You can't trip, hook with the stick, or hold onto a player but you can slam him into the boards at the side of the rink. Not allowed to use fists or elbows but shoulder is ok.

That's basically it but there are also the blue lines to consider (offsides, two-line passes and so on)....you might want to look up the rules online somewhere as it would be better explained than I can achieve.
I was going to add something about the rules but you might be better off looking online!!

Anyway, I'm a sabres fan. In some parts that doesnt count as a hockey club!! )

they've been doing ok recently no?

The sabres have been as inconsistant as ever. winning games but losing the important ones when they count the most. Theyre in a dogfight for 8th in the eastern conference, which is turning into a losing battle. The sabres are going to pay the price for a losing streak they went on before christmas. Apart from that theyre alright!! wink
Yikes, look at the Lightening go, tied with Detroit on 99 points, who ever would have thought it

I know we're having a slow year

Ive watched the Lightning play at the HSBC. Theyre a good team. Martin St.Louis is having a career season. Detroit dont have to worry about them for a while yet!! wink

Datsyuk and St.Louis have possibly got to be the 2 of the most impressive players in the league this season

Martin St Louis is a class act right now........ you know they might go all the way, I thought their streak would come to a grinding halt sooner or later, but the bubble hasn't burst with them yet.
