Is it possible to buy suet - beef or veggie I'm not fussy - in the US? Tried making dumplings using shortening but they sat like disgusting gooey lumps on top of my wonderful beef stew.
You can buy suet at most butchers ..but it's horrid. You can get British style suet (i.e. Atora) from some local stores or online. Where are you, exactly?

Here is a shopping link -you can certainly find an online store to supply it there, if not a local one

Thanx for info. I'm in Ft Myers on west coast of Florida. Have only been in US 4 months, and the kids are already complaining about the cr*p foodstuffs over here; hence attempting good old English fayre (well dumplings anyway) - but need Atora!!
Soggy dumplings? You can probably buy some cream for that mate.
Here's a recipe for dumplings click here
.

I've not tried it but recall Nigella doing something similar although I can't now find her recipe.

Debs x :)

The mention of Nigella and dumplings in the same post? Many men would swoon at the thought!

You know, you could always try freezing the shortening and then using it straight away. Never tried it myself but it might stop your dumplings going soggy.

the other thought, and something I do instead of dumplings, is do a scone topping and bake it in the oven. Goes down a treat with my kids and I think they prefer it over the dumplings.

We have been here 5 years and my kids are preferring American food over British now and have done for quite a while. You will be surprised on how quick the kids tastes will change )
