Even after almost 10 years here I'm still amazed at how bad the supermarkets are about removing produce from their shelves when they have passed their sell by date.
At the local Stop & Shop today I picked up a bag of carrot sticks with a sell by date of Feb 23, all of that particular brand were marked the same. I went to the next shelf and picked up the same item different brand. The first bag was dated sell by December 27!!! I checked the bags next to this one and found they were dated sell by January 12 roll
Its not just Stop & Shop that have this problem I regularly come across out of date in all the different supermarket chains round here and it was the same where I lived in NJ.
For a little while one of the supermarkets here had big posters up exclaiming that if you found an out of date item and brought it to the register they would give you a dollar - guess maybe it was costing them to much to keep that up D

What about this then Deborah, quite sometime ago I was browsing the supermarket shelves for beer, when I checked the ‘sell by date’ it was way way over. So, I checked a few more (bottles) and it was the same.
When I asked one of the staff about it they told me that – that wasn’t the sell by date that was the date it was produced! (sure enough it was just a date, it didn’t say ‘sell by’)
I have subsequently checked other items and found that most have a sell by date but some, including all locally brewed beer has this produced date on it.
What I have been told is that the consumer is supposed to decide from this date whether to purchase or not, I find this very strange
:-? :-?
When I buy beer it usually says something like...
"Best enjoyed before (insert date here)"
That, to me, suggests a use by date not a produced on date.
I've seen canned goods in Stop&Shop way past their use by date and brought them to the attention of the management. Not seen any veg like that though...must be more observant next time I'm shopping!

Our local Kroger has yoghurts dated at the beginning of January. I have come to the conclusion that nobody but me buys these yoghurts. The first time I saw them, I took one lot to the checkout and told them about it. The next time I went, more with the same date had been added. They are still there. (New produce is added on top -stock rotation -wassat?) Nobody is buying them. I might point them out again, but they were so rude last time I really can't be bothered and I'm curious to see if a new life form evolves. It's a good job these thinga are irradiated to the point of glowing or somebody might actually be in danger of poisoning roll

Ta for me morning larf. Always makes for a brighter day :D
Monster, next time you go - if they are still in the fridge, put a little post-it note on them telling people how long they have been there and that you are going to report them to the Department of Health. See if that makes a difference!

I'd probably get banned
....wonder if I'll be the first person banned from Kroger?
ABC did a piece on how some supermarkets were re-labelling the meats with new expiration dates. They made a "secret mark" on the bottom of the packs and noted the date, the next day when they went back, the mark was still there but the date was changed.
I saw the sushi guy at my local Stop & Shop peeling labels off the sushi trays and then sticking new ones on (don't know if the dates were altered though). All the trays in the cabinet were dateless which is how I noticed. I called the manager who assured me that all sushi trays that aren't sold each day get returned to the company so it would be of no benefit for the guy to change the dates.... he was quite nice about it all, but I haven't bought sushi there since.
PS.
Budweiser (and some other beers) have a "born on" date, which is a marketing ploy to make you think your beer tastes better because it's "fresher".
Alot of supermarkets (or any store ) that packeges its own food does that and its a problem .
With food that come in prepacked i always dive to the back of the shelf to find the most recently stocked item .
Watch when they fill the shelves at night and see them pull the old stuff to the front .
As always CAVIAT EMPTER .
That's the thing about Kroger, though, they don't even bother to put the older stuff at the front, the just pile the new stuff in on top of the old. Quality supermarket, I tell you! roll
Some Kroger products have begun to infiltrate my local supermarket (Fred Meyer) evil
I think they are all owned by the same parent company.
I used to work at a Brewers Fayre (think Applebees naff type place) in South Wales and was privy to an audit that discovered that almost every single alcoholic product we owned bar wines and spirits was past its use by date. Apparently our bar manager bought it all on the cheap and didn't ever figure he'd get caught.
You can sometimes smell the fish counter in the Albertsons here even though they obviously don't have any sell by dates on the supposedly fresh fish. Anyone for brown tuna steaks? o & salmon with big cracks in it. o I know it may take them some time to get saltwater fish to Nebraska but honestly. roll
I always rummage to the back of the dairy case for milk and yogurt. I also can tell my local supermarket buys low grade produce as it's next to rotting when they put it out on display. Watch out for salad dressings dates too.
