Or something new-fangled? What do you cook on? What do you prefer?
We're stuck with electric at the mo, but the tax refund may change that. I hate electric.
Anyone had a gas cooker installed in the States? Is it pricey? We'll need a pipe run up from the basement below, but people don't seem to think that'll be expensive. I'm sceptical about that.
Why is there such a predominance of electric cookers in America? Is it because fewer people really cook and electric seems less scary? Most of the few houses where we see gas cookers are the ones where people really cook rather than using the microwave or electric griddle gadget thing.
We inherited a nasty old gas over/stove with the house. I would much prefer to rip it all out and have a single halogen hob thingy built into the counter.
More pressing things to do with the house first, including getting a dishwasher, the kids won't be around forever you know! wink

We have gas.
When we bought our home it had electric but that was very short lived.
Installing a gas line isn't expensive provided there's no serious plumbing to to and you don't have to worry about code amendments and such.
I think it cost us about $200 to have the gas line put in.
As for electric everywhere, I think it's a throwback to when "electric" was the modern thing...
Andrew :)
We have Gas! D
(must have been all the beer from last night) lol
I've had both.
Before coming here I'd mainly used gas. The house we bought here first had electric and I was always messing things up because I was used to the heat stopping immediately when you turned it off.
Eventually we replaced all the appliances and went with gas(propane). I thought I would love it but it was not that great. It took longer to get anything to a boil and impossible to get a pan hot enough to sear anything.
We bought on the lower price range of stoves, though not the cheapest by any means. I think that was the problem, you really need to go with a higher end(more expensive) product with more btu's per burner to get what you would from a UK stove.
When we moved I went back to electric, 1 because the house doesn't have any gas hooked up and 2, I had been disappointed with the gas.
Now I would still go back to gas if I could afford another high end stove and the installation of the gas. Of course it would have to have 2 ovens too like the one I have now.
I've used both but current house has natural gas oven.
My mum had a halogen hob and electric fan oven back in the early 90's which was really nice and as good as any gas oven I've seen - very easy to keep clean as well.

My folks had one too, and those are my reasons for wanting one too.
Gas hob, electric ovens (one conventional and one fan).
We had a GE electric dinosaur in the US, and frankly, I prefered cooking on the barbecue.
I grew up with gas hob and electric fan oven. I am not a fan of gas ovens nor electric hobs, probably because I was used to the reverse. Gas on the hob has so much more control. Gas ovens on the other hand seemed a bit stinky. At least the one I had in a flea pit flat I used to rent in the UK.
Had a fan oven in the UK and a gas hob.
Had both gas and electric in the US and much prefer gas for both hob and oven.
Only had a gas oven fitted and no gas pipe needed rerouting because it was already there for the old oven. It cost us approx. $300 for the old oven to be taken out and the new oven fitted.
We have electric, because its what came with the house. I prefer a gas hob, but to be honest I've got used to the electric and don't mind it now.
However, if/when our furnace needs replacing I may switch that to gas from oil, and would then probably get a gas stove and water heater too.
We had halogen stove tops in the UK, I can't believe the old-fashioned electric ring monster cookers you get here. I prefer electric to gas (since you asked wink ) only because I set fire to my gas cooker once. Which wasn't nice. (

Two weeks in the new house was all it took for us *cough-beest-cough* to set fire to the electric one
I hope neither Beest or Lizzi were among the people who laughed at me for blowing up the water in the microwave wink
Wendl we had a gas (propane) stove in our last place, it was terrible too. Wonder if it's just propane!! We have an electric flat top one here, it's good but I do need to replace a couple of saucepans. roll Ideally I would like a gas top & electric oven,
