This contest is judged by the best photograph taken. Zippy, this is right up your alley!
But is it up his street?
Well, first of all this should be in the Sports Forum (where it will be going after I write this...)...
and....
...although I couldn't find the competition, I do not ever enter photo competitions as invariably they're scams (more often than not you give up all rights to the image when you enter - so okay you might win a prize but if an image is good enough to win a prize why shouldn't you get paid for it?)
But I do appreciate the thought.

Hello Andrew,
I edited my post to show the correct URL. Now perhaps you could take one more quick visit to see that:
11 tickets plus 4 nights hotel accommodations, double occupancy,
Lunch with an NFL player(s) and/or coach(es) is the Grand prize. All that added up I am sure is most probably worth more money than you would have gotten if you had been professionally paid??? :D
As far as this being a scam, I highly doubt that, as this offer comes directly from the Southwest Airlines website, and Southwest Airlines is a name you can trust. Okay, it is a name I can trust. I'll speak for myself here.
Not sure if you would be giving up rights to your photo. That really does depend upon the contest, and all rules would have to be read, and if the rules do not state the rights about the photograph, then of course one would have to ask.
Not trying to change your mind at all, just wanted you to have additional data.

It's a great prize but I don't see anything about having to submit a photograph on the website at all. -?

Hello Wendl,
I hadn't realized they have two contests going. Here's the link/contest for the photograph submission:

Thank you for the link....
Here's the bit I'm uncomfortable with:
Quote:
The photograph entered shall be judged by a panel of judges to be coordinated and governed by Southwest Airlines Co. staff members. Judging shall be based on the quality, content and portrayal of Southwest Airlines Co. and football. The judges’ decisions shall be final. Finalist agrees that Southwest Airlines Co. has the right to publish the winning photograph in a future edition of Rapid Report, including but not limited to other Southwest Airlines publications.
So my point being is that a 3x5 or 5x7 image can end up anywhere, as one is never fully sure of who owns what.
Now the prize value is $3K. You will invariably have to pay taxes on that (depending on what state you're in could be a third of it's value).
Now, as an example. I recently licensed an image for a magazine (not sure if it's gonna run but they wanted to use it at some point and I wasn't about to let them have it until I was paid) for the following fee:
The magazine has a run rate of between 50-100K, the picture is going to be used in a quarter page, thus the fee I charged for a one time use in that magazine is $1900.
But if that image goes to another magazine for usage, and the same size, bam, I get another $1900 and so on.
To give you another example, lets say I have the same image on a cover (which could be where the winners shot could end up) for that same image I would charge $7400.
So if the winner gets $3K, that could end up to being the equivalent of a broom handle if that image ends up in a few magazines.
Not withstanding all the poor souls who blindly send in images (some of which could be very good shots) that end up in some stock folder somewhere being used "royalty free".
Invariably, it's the people who make a living from photography that get hurt.
Just some insight into the whole "photo competition" thing for you...
Andrew :)

Okay Andrew, I completely understand your viewpoint on being cautious of submitting work that a professional could be paid more for. I had no idea professional photographs were that costly.
I got it on that this contest keeps the rights to photos submitted. :(
Regarding photographs ending up anywhere, yes I would be worried about that myself if I was a professional photographer. Writers too, face royalty losses due to publishers stealing their work. I wouldn't want to be in Rosanne's shoes at the moment. Boy did she look mad yesterday at the courts.
