Five live are doing a competition right now to judge the 10 most memorable sporting events.
so go on have a crack then. D
Not within my personal memory, but the 4-minute mile has to be up there.

In the almost 50 years since Roger Bannister broke the 4-minute mile, there have only been about 1000 other such records. Given the superior equipment, knowledge, training and diets nowadays, it is still a major achievement.
1.1966 world cup England vs Germany
2.Last years Fiesta bowl. Miami vs Ohio.
3.This years game 7 of the ALCS Yankee's vs Redsox.
4.Ben Johnson wins gold 1988 Seoul olympics.
5.1981 FA cup final replay Tottenham vs Man City, Ricky Villas goal(A personal fav of mine!)
6.1994 San Marino F1 GP for all the wrong reasons(Ayrton Sennas death on race day and Roland Ratzenburgers death on saturday)

.....I'll be back with more D
Roger Bannister would be in my 10, as would Steve Redgraves 5th gold medal at 5 different games.
also
Headingly Test with Ian Botham in 1981
Hillsborough
Hysel
Bradford Fire.
England v Germany in 1990 (aaah bless he's cryin!)
England v Germany in 2001
Europe winning the Ryder Cup in 1987
Gary Sobers 6 sixes in an over.

Also for the record, you know the americans are always on about the miracle on ice in the 1980 winter olympics.......
USSR beat USA in basketball final, 1972
The Americans were clear favourites in this hugely controversial basketball final - they were unbeaten in Olympic competition having won seven golds in an unbeaten 63-match run. With time running out, the USA had a one point advantage and looked the winners. But the referees added three seconds. The ball was handed to the USSR who scored with a long pass and lay-up, snatching victory by 51 points to 50. The vanquished US rejected the result and refused to accept their silver medals.
not so sporting then were they, maybe miracle on parque flooring doesn't have the same ring to it.
How about that Aborigini woman winning her race at the Aussie Olympics, sorry don't remember her name.
Very memorable eh? lol

Cathy Freeman.

How about Derek Redmond during a qualifying run of the 400 at the Barcalona olympics, getting injured half way round and being helped the rest of the way by his dad in tears.
Oh yes I remember that, very heart wrenching to watch.
In no particular order

1 1966 world cup final
2 Celtic win the European Cup
3 Mansell's tyre explodes at Australian GP
4 Australia II wins the America's Cup
5 Steve Redgrave say's we can shoot him if he goes near a boat again!
6 England-Germany 1990
7 England-Germany 2001
8 Man Utd win European Cup 1968
9 Man Utd win European Cup 1999
10 England win Ashes 1981 (Not just Headingly, but the Oval test too)
My son says:

Man U winning the Champions League a few years ago - 2 goals in injury time against Bayern Munich.

He also says Maradona's "Hand of God" in the '90 (ok, he says '86 but I swear it was '90) World Cup. (He was born in 1992, btw, so this is obviously the stuff legends are made of).

On the footie theme, it would be hard not to include Celtic's European Cup win - the first British team.

also the first non latin team to win it, also all 11 Celtic players were born within 30 miles of Parkhead.

I think it was the way United won in 1999 that sticks with people. However for 88 minutes the game was as boring as sin.

some others for the record........
Northern Ireland 1-0 Spain in 1982 in Spain world cup.

Does Kevin Keegan getting mugged and twatted around the head with a baseball bat count as a memorable sporting event?

not a horses person but Dettori's 7 win in one meet was cool.
A few that come to mind without really thinking about it too much.

Daley Thompson winning back-to-back Olympic Golds for Decathlon.
Seb Coe's long standing 800m World record
What was his last name? Alan whatshisname from Scotland winning 100m gold in 1980 (even though the US boycotted Moscow). I've got it now - Alan Wells
Coe, Cram, Ovett winning gold, silver and bronze in the 1500m in Barcelona (was it Barcelona? Was it the 1500 or the 800?)
Obviously '66
Ricky Villa's goal in the Man City replay
Glenn Hoddle's playing career for Spurs
Gazza's tears in 90
Steve Redgrave's 5 golds
Roger Bannister's sub-4

Son is right - definitely was in 1986, in Mexico and not 1990 which was in Italy.

Moscow Olympics.

Coe won Gold in 1500, Ovett Bronze.

Ovett won Gold in the 800, Coe Silver.

Do you remember Coe stuffing his silver medal in his pocket after the ceremony, obviously ultra-pissed off at not winning?

The other memory I have of the Moscow games was the "youngest ever British medal winner" - does anyone remember her name? She became one of my best friends at Uni.
I so definitely recall one time when they all three finished in medal positions. Cram wasn't around in 80 was he?

Is the lady you're talking about Kathy someone or other? 400m runner? God I'm starting to feel old.

I think Cram was 82 on. His record for 1500m stood for yonks. I think it has only recently been broken. He overlapped with Coe in the LA Games - Coe took gold (for a second time) and Cram silver. The LA games were good for British athletes.

Not Kathy - but she did run 400m. She got her bronze medal in the 4x400m relay.
