Background
I'm a Permanent Resident Alien, I've been here 13 years. I've been divorced for 7 years from my American wife. I've been with my girlfriend/partner/whatever for 6 years. We have a 7 month old daughter.
Question
I know of we were married when our daughter was born, she (the daughter) would be a dual citizen. The web site http//www.britainusa.com/ states as much, and has a form to register her birth with the consulate. However, the form asks for when the father & mother were married - there is no provision for unmarried.
Does anyone know if my daughter can claim dual citizenship, even though her mother and I are unmarried? I'm on the US birth certificate as the father.
i would assume that since you are still a UK citizen, your daughter would be able to claim UK citizenship through you, so i would think she would be a dual citizen.
Well, it appears that "illegitimate" children (despite 6 years together being considered common-law marriage in the UK) are not automatically considered British by descent if the father is British, only if the mother is sad
Guess I need to write to the consulate to find out what my options are.
