With all the hoopla after 9/11 I'm wondering if anyone has taken a day trip etc to Mexico / Canada and then returned just using their US drivers license.......I know for many years that this was sufficient ID......how on earth do they know if your an american citizen (born or otherwise). Do the computers at the border really hold that much information and more importantly are they checking everyone who crosses in thru the US Citizen lines with just driver's licenses, this in light of CA plan to give illegals licenses. I'm obviously very bored at work today and have nothing better to do than bug you guys!! lol
I wouldn't risk it with just a driver's licence. But then I still sound very British. I think on high risk days here (next to Canada) they ask for Birth certs too.
Just a month ago we took a trip to N.S. Canada.
On the way there we were not asked for any kind of i.d., not even the dogs health cert..
On the way back my hubby showed his military i.d. that the border guy said 'What's that you got, oh" but never actually looked at it.
None of us were asked to show anything else, or even if we were U.S.
I was sure we would be asked for everything because our sons passport actually ran out while we were up there and we didn't have his birth cert. with us.
So much for all the extra border patrols.
I've been to canada and back with no documentation whatsoever!!
But I cheated.....was in a canoe and there was nothing but lakes, trees, bald eagles and loons -)
I cross over to Windsor quite regularly. I have the I551 stamp in my passport, but when we first went Melissa had nowt but her drivers license. They were gonaa let me in fine, she would have had to be processed.....
I'd still take further documentation because you just 'never' know.

But you do know that you are still supposed to have an I-68 or go to the nearest border crossing for a permit, right. :-? :D :D
