Apparently my wife and I, and everybody we have ever cooked for, should be dead by now.

Well, I scored 6 1/2 so our kitchen just passed. But that doesn't surprise me as I am a terrible housekeeper and my husband would be much better at it.
On a side note, the use of bleach in my opinion, is way over used in many households. In one household that I knew, at 5pm, the smell of bleach was overwhelming because the wife was obsessed with keeping her house germ free. In was so germ free, her kids were constantly ill as any natural resistant they had, was wiped away by her too caring attitude. My attitude has always been a little dirt never hurt anyone (which isn't true I know) and my kids have always been healthier than most other kids I know who are coddle and pampered from the perils of life.

I got eight out of ten.
I've never poisoned anyone, intentionally or otherwise and I defrost my meats by leaving them on the countertop so there! P
Debs x D

Five here.
Not sure the septic tank would take kindly to having bleach poured down the drains!

I got 9 and disagree with the answer to the one I got wrong -if you put piping hot food in a refrigerator, it's going to warm up the stuff around it before it all cools down which is not good.
And they missed they important stuff like
[list]
[*]When you taste stuff you're cooking do you
-use your fingers
-use your fingers and lick them clean
-use the cooking utensil and put it back in
-don't taste it and hope for the best
[*]When you pick up food you dropped on the floor, do you
-dust it off before eating
-run it under the tap first
-just stuff it in
-put it on someone else's plate
[*]When you sneeze while cooking do you
-use the teatowel
-stir it in
-turn to one side and spray the waiting plates
[*]Do you clean the kitchen floor
-when visitors are expected
-only when important visitors are expected
-only when the dishwasher leaks
-that's what the dog's for
[*]How often do you take the garbage out?
-weekly when it's due to be collected
-before visitors arrive
-when you can't see for flies
-never, it sort of falls out by itself

Monster, I am totally with you there regarding hot food. This could be the difference between UK and US though, as I have seen on packs of food (including meat) here that an item can be refrozen! Something you are told to never do in the UK.
I also am sure that in the UK you are OK to allow food to defrost on the side as Debs does. this also could be a difference between the two countries because of the temperature differences.
I got 9/10 because I know the answers, not because I do that all the time. I certainly don't bleach down everything every time. Hot soapy water is good enough in my house and I've never poisoned/killed anyone yet (notice the yet D ).
I seem to remember there was a germ tester thing done on the UK tv quite a few years ago and the expert on there was saying that using rubber gloves and washing everything down with hot (as hot as you can stand it) soapy water was the right thing to do. then put your cloth (he didn't recommend you use disposable cloths) and/or sponge in the microwave for a minute until it was steaming hot. A great way to de-germ your dish cloths and sponges.

Not quite sure of some of the answers but i got most right .
I dont use bleach on the counter tops or any where near food and i clean the disposal with soap and water and also pour ice down it each week to keep it sharp .
The question about dethawing food from the freezer?all our frozen food is in plastic bags and marked with date purchased/,frozen and is left on the counter on a covered dish for a short while before being put in fridge to finish the process .
Dont know the temp of the fridge will cheeck it when i get of line .
Care should be taken to clean hands before and after handling any item of food and cutting boards are used one time and then cleaned in dish washer , we have many so a fresh board can be used for each item handled

I try to steer away from it but I generally see food in our supermarkets that are being sold as fresh meat but are frozen!!!.....I was toaught never to refreeze raw meat at home.
I tend to defrost in the fridge though if in a big hurry I will defrost in the microwave, but not turn the microwave on. I use the microwave space as it is insulated and therefore will slow down the defrosting process but not as much as putting it in the fridge....kinda like a thermos keeping a drink cold but not as cold as refridgerating it.
I wait until food is nearly cool before placing it in the freezer or fridge, it is far more dangerous in my opinion to put piping hot food into fridge/freezer because the frozen foods in the will start to defrost with the heat.
I dont bleach a lot because we have a septic tank but I do put ice or bones down to give it a good sharpening.....With the ice and with running plenty of cold water through the system I must be doing something right as it never smells. Plus come to think of it why does the disposal need to be brilliantly hygenic, do people prepare food in it??
