Kicks major butt in practice..
(ok, so it's practice, but think about the fact that they're using a 2001 car vs new cars from the other teams)
Tomorrow - Qualifying 6pm pst - 9pm est
Schumi on pole?
Waddya think?
Anybody have experience with fantasy motor-racing? If so, I'm in (I have no clue) and I'm Schumi with the Ferrari...
Andrew
Once again, I am about to be guilty of a reply that isn't exactly in line with the thread but there you go......
How do the F1 authorities justify banning certain additions and upgrades to cars? For me, the constant engineering, tweaking and occasional revolutionary introduction is what makes the "car" side of things so exciting. The drivers are ok and a handful are really brilliant but it's the car that really gives the boost. Anyway, my point is that the cars just seem a bit dumbed down nowadays, as if the teams know it's not worth breaking the mould too much as too drastic a change will only mean it getting banned the following season.
Remember that Tyrell car with six wheels? OK, so it wasn't a roaring success but with another season or two, they may have developed that further. That was banned.
Then there was the fan system that created huge suction to the ground and terrific downforce - banned again, yet I like the way some F1 improvements have filtered down to our road cars so it seems silly to restrict it so much. If it's that good, the other teams will copy it later anyway so where is the unfair advantage? Same goes for fuel additives, certain wing configurations, certain tires etc. etc.
I've said before how I started to lose interest in F1 a few years back when it seemed to become little more than a procession where the top few cars might jostle a bit but positions didn't change too often. That may have changed now - certainly Andrew, you seem to have massive enthusiasm for the current few seasons, so I will trust your judgement and start to watch again but wanted to register my complaints against the F1 governing authorities.
I have never played fantasy F1 so no idea how it is played.
OK Fantasy F1.
I'm having Coulthard. eek
Fantasy Football works because there are so many players and so many possible combinations. To make Fantasy F1 work, you would have to impose some artificial rules to make for more combinations, otherwise player A takes the Ferrari team, player B the MacLarens -game over, man.
How about
you pick a team -two drivers and a constructor, one driver from the top half of the field (according to some pre-agreed classification), one from the bottom half.
To make it more interesting, you can't have any driver/driver or driver/constructor combination that actually exists in this years competition. So maczippy, you'd have to choose between Schumi and Ferrari.
No two fantasy players can have exactly the same combination (it'd be a bit pointless)-so first come first served, but there's nothing to say that everyone can't have Schumi, though. Me, I'd have Coulthard just to be patriotic and different. Ferrari as constructor, and I'll get back to you on my second driver.
Your score each race is the total points of your two drivers and the two drivers racing for your constructor. The winner is the one with the most points at the end of the season, natch.
Oh yeah, and late joiners would be welcome, but could only score half the points for their team for races already completed.
In Fantasy Football, you can change your team through transfers etc, but I don't really see how that would work here and would probably make it unecessarily complicated -especially as the F1 teams don't normally change during the season.
What do you think? Want to try?
If you split the drivers by their standings last season, you get:
The A list:
M Schumacher
Coulthard
Barichello
R Schumacher
Montoya
Villeneuve
Heidfeld
Trulli
Raikkonen
Fisichella
Irvine
The B list: (those racing last year ordered by standing, rest in random order)
Frentzen
Panis
de la Rosa
Button
Salo
Bernoldi
Sato
Massa
McNish
Webber
Young
The other way to choose drivers would be to "price" each driver and give each player a certain amount to spend.
If we're on and using the categories above, I'll have Button to keep the British theme going. (I know nothing about form of drivers/cars etc, really, I just like to watch it  )
I'm in if you can do do the matrix on this.
I'll go for Schumacher and Williams/BMW
You, being some kind of numerical goddess can do the rest..
Let's see what we can do here for fun!
Andrew
Well, I'll give it a go! After Couthard's trip on a lawnmower today, it looks like I'm definitley on a loser -10 points for the Ferrari win for me.
Who's your second driver, and am I to assume you made your selections before todays GP?
Anyone else?

or that new gryo people thang...
Aha!, closer this week
maczippy 10 points for Schumi, 6 and 2 for Williams =18 -you're slipping grin TOTAL 58
monster 4 for coulthard, 3 for Button and 10 for Ferrari -I've doubled my score! TOTAL 34
Colthard must've tuned up his lawnmower for the spring.
Dc didn't do too bad, neither to Jensen Button (local boy from Frome - well, local for me!)
But it was a good race with MS duelling it out with his brither Ralph. Excellent race...
Andrew,
charter member of Britnets 2 member F1 club!
Good race, shame about the result though,im not a Schumacher fan,(please don't hold that against me)I thought Ralph could have done a lot more to get passed his brother, maybe he should swap cars with Barrichello, trailing behind Schumacher grin

Okay, I won't!
Looks like we have our 3rd F1 fan on Britnet!
Im a Villenuve fan,but less said the better about that at the moment(but he will be back!!!)So im routing for Montoya,
Veeell-nerve (as they say here) whines to much for me, but he is a good driver too.
Montoya is the one to watch for the future, did you see how he came from the back to finish 5th! Yep, he has that Schumacher thing going on. (Although he whining after the race doesn't do him any favour IMHO)
Im off to the Indy F1 in September, can't wait,
You'll LOVE it (except Indianapolis itself...Most boring place in the world)
Be prepared to hear all the time how these cars go the WRONG way around the track, and HEAVENS forbid, they race in the rain! They go on and on and on and on about this...
We went to the inaugral F1 there two years ago and it was a blast!
Oh, and make sure you take some warm clothing..it can get quite cold in the stands!
Silverstone have gone mad,you have to attend all 3 days and its 300 pounds a ticket
That's ridiculous. Out ticket for Indy was a lot more than that as we went mad, but it was still fun all the same!
Andrew
My moneys on Montoya winning the world championship this year, did'nt hear him at the end of the race, but he was certainly did'nt deserve the 10 second penalty last race mad What i like about him and Villenuve is they will always have a go!,most F1 drivers have this thing about Schumacher and don't pass him. There needs to be alot more overtaking(those Mansell/Senna battles were great!)
Im hoping Villenuve will change teams next year,i would love to see him in the Ferrari, just like his Dad,only if Schumacher would have a team mate with equal status! Your only bench mark is your team mate,I like the way most teams let there drivers race against each other.Shame McLaren seem to have lost it this season Mika did well to get out when he did,i don'nt think he will return though.
I will wrap up warm at Indy with my Villenuve hat/jumper/flag etc etc lol
